Camunda 7-class performance. An open-source path off Camunda 7.
An identical invoice-approval process on Camunda 7, Fluxnova, and Camunda 8, run on Amazon EKS. Fluxnova performed in Camunda 7’s class with zero failures. Camunda 8’s distributed architecture is a different tradeoff, which we cover below.
The headline is not that one engine narrowly beat another. Across runs, Fluxnova and Camunda 7 traded the lead at different volumes, which is normal benchmark variance. The signal that matters is that Fluxnova holds Camunda 7-class performance and gives organizations an open-source path forward, after Camunda 7 Community Edition shipped its final release in October 2025.

KEY FINDINGS
Camunda 7-class performance. Fluxnova and Camunda 7 completed the runs in the same performance class, roughly 17 to 21 seconds for 1,000 workflows at about 50 per second.
Variance, not a winner. Each engine edged ahead at a different volume, Fluxnova at 300 instances and Camunda 7 at 1,000. We read that as normal benchmark variance, not a meaningful advantage for either platform.
Camunda 8 is an architectural tradeoff. Its distributed stack carries materially higher per-workflow overhead for this stateful workload. That same distribution delivers horizontal scale and resilience properties some organizations need. The question is whether those benefits justify the tradeoff for your workload.

THE PROCESS WE TESTED
One invoice approval process, three engines.
An architectural tradeoff, not a verdict.
On Camunda 7 and Fluxnova the service tasks run as in-process logic against PostgreSQL. On Camunda 8 every task is an external job served by gRPC workers through the Zeebe gateway into Elasticsearch. For this stateful workload, that distribution adds materially higher per-workflow overhead. It also delivers the horizontal scale and operational resilience some organizations require. Organizations should determine whether the benefits of that architecture justify the tradeoff for their specific use case.
How we tested: one identical BPMN process deployed per engine, out-of-the-box configuration on Amazon EKS (us-east-1). The load driver starts 300 / 1,000 instances across 10 concurrent threads and measures wall-clock time until every instance completes (throughput = completed ÷ total time). Preliminary results showing relative behavior, not a certified production benchmark. Full methodology and environment specs shared on request.
